Undergraduate Scholarships

In 1973 Mrs. Margaret Earl set up the James Earl Mathematics Scholarship for UNO undergraduate mathematics majors, in honor of her husband, Dr. James Earl. Dr. Earl joined the UNO Mathematics Department in 1931, became department chair in 1932, and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1962. Starting in Fall 1973 three $1000 scholarships were awarded to deserving undergraduate mathematics majors. In Spring 2002 the scholarship fund was anonymously endowed with $125,000. Beginning in Fall 2002 a total of $5000 will be divided annually amongst several deserving mathematics majors.

Each Spring scholarship recipients for the coming year are selected based on their overall GPA, outstanding performance in mathematics courses and their participation in departmental activities such as the Putnam Exam, Problem of the Week, undergraduate research, Mathematics Awareness Month, MSLC tutoring and Math Lab.

Hitchcock Foundation Scholarship

The Hitchcock Foundation annually contributes a $500 scholarship, each to the Biology, Math, Chemistry and Physics Departments. The Math Department awards this scholarship to an incoming freshman who declares math as their major.

Fall 2008 recipient: Josh Strese
Fall 2007 recipient: Angella Mertz

The awardee will continue to receive the scholarship for 4 yrs. by remaining a math major, maintaining a 3.0 GPA or better, and maintaining full-time status.

Kate Field Grant-In-Aid Scholarship

Amount Awarded: Annual Stipend of $8,000. The Kate field Grant-In-Aid is for any full time student registered at the University of Nebraska.

Requirements of the Fund:

At the time of his or her registration "the student must have been a Nebraska resident for not less than ten years."
Applicant must be in the upper three-fourth of their previous year's college class or high school graduating class.
No Grant-In-Aid may be made to any one student for more than four years. (The student must reapply annually for consideration.)
The Grant-In-Aid may be made to either a graduate or undergraduate student.
Candidates may not be employed full-time by the University.

General UNO Scholarship

Most of the Scholarships listed on the below site are offered to graduating high school seniors who will be incoming freshmen. There are several hundred additional scholarships not listed which are awarded by the Financial Aid office to both incoming freshmen and returning students. NASA MUST Scholarship

Students pursuing a degree in a physical science, technology, engineering and mathematics related fields are eligible to apply. Applications are due by 2/1/09. Requirements include: must be a U.S. citizen, underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Must be full-time at U.S. university with a minimum of 3.0 GPA. TEACH Grants

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) grants provide $4000 a year/up to $16,000 for undergraduates, or $8000 for master's students in scholarship aid. Students must have a GPA of 3.25 or score in the top 25% on the college/graduate admissions test. Once a degree or teaching certificate is earned, TEACH grant recipients must spend at least 4 of the next 8 years teaching in a 'high-need' field (math is one) with at least 30% poor students. Alliamce/Merck Ciencia Hispanic Scholars Program

The Alliance/Merck Ciencia (Science) Hispanic Scholars Program is a new partnership to improve Hispanic student access to higher education and degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Hispanic college students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and Puerto Rico pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field major are invited to apply for a $2,000 one-time scholarship of which 25 will be awarded in the Spring of 2009. Application Period: September 16, 2008 –– January 16, 2009. You must apply online and all required materials must be received no later than midnight Eastern Standard Time on January 16, 2009.
