Knowledge & Skills
The Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication helps students develop key competencies in communicating technical information. The program emphasizes both technical and rhetorical skills including written and visual content, editing, document design and production, web design and multimedia projects. In addition to the technical aspects, the curriculum also emphasizes critical thinking, collaboration within communities of practice, problem-solving activities, and creative thinking. With these competencies, technical communicators can certainly add value to any organization’s enterprise.
Like today’s professional technical communicators, students use text- and graphics-based software to create a variety of content and genres. Students in the program learn to work collaboratively, analyzing and interpreting technical contexts and situations in order to create innovative, effective, and usable documents such as online help guides or user manuals. Students also learn to distribute technical information and interact with users of that information. The program affords certificate student the experiences and opportunities to successfully prepare for today’s professional work environments.
