Internships
An internship is highly recommended, though not required, for students enrolled in the Technical Communication Graduate Certificate. Both undergraduate and graduate students should consider this invaluable work experience as a way to enhance their education in technical communication with real-world experience.
Internships are offered for variable credit hours, depending on student’s availability and level of education. Although flexible options for internships are available for students who work full time, those with scheduling conflicts should contact the internship director to discuss other possibilities. In addition to actual work hours, internships require bi-weekly meetings with the director and other internship students, weekly activity logs, and a reflection essay written upon completion of the internship. The internship director will also request a performance evaluation from the sponsoring organization.
Communication students seeking an internship should contact Sherrie Wilson in the School of Communication. Note that Communication internships are two-credits, which will require students to complete a one-credit independent study or another internship in order for the Tech Comm requirement to be fulfilled. However, Communication students enrolled in the Tech Comm certificate program may apply for internship credit through the Department of English.
Before applying for an internship, students should review the requirements described on the English Department website. To apply for an internship, students should complete the application available from the English Department (ASH 192), from the front of Dr. Bridgeford’s office door (ASH 189P), or from the Internship page on the department website (scroll down to Required Forms). Submit the completed application to Dr. Bridgeford’s mailbox in the English Department main office (ASH 192) by the due dates indicated. After reviewing the application, Dr. Bridgeford will contact the student for a consultation. Feel free to contact Dr. Bridgeford with any questions.
