A genetics problem--inheritance in velociraptors on remote islands off the coast of Costa Rica.
Since the abandonment of Jurassic Park by Ellie Sadler, John Hammond, Ian Malcolm, Alan Grant, and the kids, the remaining velociraptors have been reproducing quickly and developing distinct populations. On a recent visit (while others were having their problems in “The Lost World” nearby) I discovered that some of velociraptors exhibited a distinct “T. rex avoidance behavior” which seems to be a dominant trait (fortunately for the survival of the species on the island!). Those with the T. rex friendly recessive seem to be conspicuously consumed at an alarming rate. In addition, I found that the gene for leucine synthesis, thought to have been suppressed by the genetic engineers of Jurassic Park, was actually common in these creatures, while only a few were still dependent on the left over leucine “licks” designed to supply their dietary leucine. Anyway, during my brief and obviously surreptitious research visit in a remote valley, I had a chance to observe the offspring produced by an unusual pair of velociraptors, both successful T. rex avoiders (fortunate actually since I found out from my genetic analysis that each had had a parent that was eaten by a T. rex!). The mother was on the verge of malnutrition (a lack of leucine) but the father was so healthy (no leucine problem here) that everyone in his family way back must have been a true-breeding leucine synthesizer!
Question 1. What is the genotype of each of the parents described above.
(use T/ t and L/l). (2 points each)
MOTHER: _________________ FATHER: ___________________
Question 2. Could any of their kids be T. rex susceptible (yes or no)?
______________________( 2 points).
Question 3. All of the kids can make their own leucine (like daddy velociraptor).
True or false ________________ (2 points).
Question 4. What percent of the offspring are expected to be homozygous for T. rex avoidance?
_________________________ (2 points).
So, what ever happened to Dodson and his company, anyway?
