Margaret R. Miles is Dean of the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley. Before coming to the GTU this year (1996-97), she taught at the Harvard University Divinity School for 18 years, where she chaired the theology department (6 years) and the Committee on Religion, Gender, and Culture since its inception. She received her B.A. and M.A. from San Francisco State University, and her Ph.D. from the Graduate Theological Union (GTU). She has lectured widely in the United States and Europe on patristic theology, asceticism, religion and art, gender theory, and film and literary criticism. She presently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Academy of Religion and the advisory board for Feminist Studies in Religion. Her publications include Seeing
and Believing: Religion and Values in the Movies (Beacon, 1996); Desire and Delight: A New Reading of
Augustine's "Confessions" (Crossroad, 1992); Carnal Knowing: Female Nakedness and Religious
Meaning in the Christian and Postchristian West
(Beacon,
1989); Practicing Christianity: Critical Perspectives
for an Embodied Spirituality (Crossroad, 1988); and Image
as Insight: Visual Understanding in Western Christianity
and Secular Culture (Beacon, 1985), as well as
numerous chapters in books and articles. Among her awards
are a Guggenheim Fellowship (1982), a fellowship at the
Rockefeller Study and Conference Center, Bellagio; Italy
(1983), and a Henry Luce III Fellow in Theology grant
