When the Russians were occupying Afghanistan we had over a dozen museum exhibits of The Afghan Folio each year, with a high of 22 exhibits and over a million visitors in 1989. The show was always billed as art, not politics. Now that the Americans are occupying Kabul, my photo shows have been reduced to one or two a year. Strange how the artistic sensibility of American and Canadian art museum directors changed so rapidly.

In 2003 one framed and crated copy of The Afghan Folio was shown briefly at the Afghan Foreign Ministry in Kabul for ceremonies surrounding Afghanistan's signing of the Treaty Banning Land Mines. This copy of the exhibit remained in the hands of UNMACA and UNESCO in Kabul, but it was never shown again, and at the end of 2007 it was returned to the United States. In general my photographs of Afghanistan are now rarely shown, no governmental organization or journalists have ever asked my opinion on events in Afghanistan, and the most informed and experienced UN people I knew were fired or driven out when the aid industry descended on Kabul en masse in 2002. That complicity of academia with these recent American wars has been one of the saddest things to watch. The way in which Americans allow Jewish "experts" to dominate the American public discussion of political relations with Islamic nations will one day be widely seen as blatantly unfair and very short sighted. I have consistently tried to remain politically neutral in all that I have done, but Americans and Europeans have been so manipulated by partisan propaganda that my neutrality by contrast may appear partisan.
