"Shasha" means "little duck" in Nubian. These islands are a part of the first cataract of the Nile near Aswan. Here the river becomes impassible for boats for the first time in its course to the Mediterranean. This island is used by Nubian peasants as a place to cut grass for fodder for animals, and there are a few fields and farm huts here, but no houses. The next large islands downstream are Elephantine Island and Kitchner's Island.
