This is the first of eight pictures in Ceylon, In the Clouds.

The Anarathapura and Polanaruva civilizations in Ceylon built large man-made lakes in many places to control flooding and to regulate water for agriculture. Some of these lakes, or "tanks" as they are called, still exist, and many of them have been restored or enlarged during the last century. Buddhism began in India, but in India it was eventually incorporated into and pushed aside by a resurgence of Hinduism. However, Buddhism spread beyond India, especially into the Himalayas, Ceylon and Southeast Asia. The Buddhists built extensive civilizations in previously inhospitable mountains and jungles by patiently controlling water.
