Ghazni was the center of south central Asia while it was the capital of the Ghaznavid Empire (994-1160). It was sacked and rebuilt by the mysterious Ghorids in 1151. In 1221 Ghazni was devasted by Ghenghis Khan. In the 19th century famous battles between the English and its Afghan defenders were fought beneath the walls of the citadel, and King Amanullah, the reformer, took his last stand here, before he was forced to flee into exile.
